The count starts after today and runs to December 31, which is included. So on December 30 there is 1 day left, and on December 31 there are none. The page also shows the count that includes today.
The date is taken from your device, so the count changes at midnight where you are. A leap year has 366 days instead of 365; the next leap year is 2028.
